Cabinet Refacing: The What & How

White Kitchen Cabinets

What do we even mean when we say “cabinet refacing?” Often people mistake this with cabinet replacement, but that is a different process altogether. Refacing is simply updating your existing cabinetry with new paint colors, texture and/or new fixtures.

When doing a total cabinet replacement, your kitchen will be gutted and all the cabinetry will be replaced; however, when refacing, the cabinet doors will be removed and painted, given updated fixtures, refinished etc.. and then placed back in their original spot, looking brand new! There are a multitude of options when it comes to deciding to reface your cabinets and this makes the process that much more convenient and affordable, especially if you can’t afford to have your kitchen out of commission for an extended amount of time. Of course any time there’s a decision to be made when it comes to choosing the best option for any home renovation project, there are pros and cons to consider. While refacing offers the obvious pros of less time, cost, and great new look, over time you may need to do some more updating on them as normal wear and tear of the kitchen will begin to set in. However,  in our professional opinion, the pros far outway the cons on this issue. It is really up to the condition of your current cabinetry and if it will last another 10 years, and just needs a simple facelift, or if it makes more sense to totally replace them, and not have to worry about it for years to come.
